Two Questions

  • 18th Jul, 2009 at 5:57 AM
1. Anyone know of a store that has a range of waffle irons? Myer only had two -- a Breville Waffle Creations (bit too small for my liking, pockets aren't very deep), and a Sunbeam Belgian Waffle maker (which looked good). Harvey Norman also had the Breville variety. David Jones had zip. I don't think I'm up for importing something from overseas, so I'll take what I can find.

2. Is it just me or has Borders' selection of books decreased? All the novels that I was after weren't on the shelves, and I thought they'd be popular enough to warrant being on offer.

Bonus rant: MasterChef is a bit of a farce. Well, it did show signs of being a farce quite early on, but Chris not being in the final two is dodgy (some might say that Chris being in the competition was dodgy, given his dominance though out the course of the show). It's comparable to having the seventh and eighted place footy team in the finals getting into the Grand Final, and having the top contender not make it. But hey, that's reality TV for you, no one ever said anything about being fair.

3 things that ruin my computing experience

  • 17th Jul, 2009 at 12:45 PM
I'm getting anxious for my new Dell laptop to arrive. I don't want to wait two more weeks. I'm tired of using this piece of crap work laptop.

Here are my biggest Windows/Vista pet peeves that make me want to convert to a Mac (well, Macs still do these, but not nearly as bad):
  1. Programs locking up and not quitting on force quit/end task/end process -- It's annoying when applications lock up, but even more when they won't close when I try to force quit out of them. I hate staring at a faded window with a "Not Responding" message. Just close the damn thing already so I can restart it.

  2. Shut down time -- Why can't computers shut off instantly? With almost every other piece of equipment/technology, you press a button or turn a key and the machine shuts off. Not so with computers. Does every application really need to close before turning off the power? I don't want or need to save anything. Combine this with #1 to piss me off even more. I should not have to manually exit programs or wait 5 minutes before my computer shuts down!

The Windows shut down messages are dumb as well. Why does it have to "save my settings?" Shouldn't it have already done that when the settings were first changed? Why does it take so long to "log off" my account? I'm not even connected to any other computers. What is it doing behind the scenes that take so long? Sometimes I just make my laptop sleep instead, but then it feels slower the next day and apps seem to crash more often.

  3. Boot up time -- My laptop only has one account that I use every single day. Why can't it detect this and preload all my settings in the background before I type in my password? Instead I have to wait for it to boot up to Windows, type in my password, then wait AGAIN for my account to initialize itself.
I hope Windows 7 handles these issues better. My work laptop has hardware issues of its own, so all the annoyances above are compounded. Never buy an HP laptop! I've been through two of them at work and they both sucked.

Police Wrap - 17 July

  • 17th Jul, 2009 at 6:13 AM

1. Thuggies come to Civic:

ACT Legislative Assembly car park Friday, July 17, 2009 in which two males were assaulted and had cash and mobile phones stolen.

ACT Policing Beats Team responded to the incident, in which it had been reported that the two males were assaulted by a group of five males. An 18-year-old man from Red Hill received a possible jaw fracture while another 18-year-old man from Downer received soft tissue issues to his face.

Police had stopped and questioned five male youths as persons of interest for suspicious behaviour earlier in the evening and suspect the same group may have been involved in the aggravated robbery.

    Enquiries are continuing.

Police would urge anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity or behaviour in Civic, particularly around the Legislative Assembly car park on London Circuit, in the early hours of this morning, possibly involving a group of five male youths, should contact Crime Stoppers.

If you can help police contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.

It was with a heavy heart that I let through a story by Brianh wanting to “spread the word” of plans by the Canberra Muslim Community (one of many CMCs) to buy a block of land in Nicholls, presumably for the same sorts of purposes as other religious communities buy land for without any great hue and cry.

But, as it’s not just a website for people I agree with, approve it I did, albeit leaving a note, and left it to the Riot readership to go over the issues.

This prompted an amazing comment this morning which I believe is an easy winner of “Flame Of The Week”.

Nicholls shops were built to serve the Nicholls community (rate payers of Nicholls), now we have a greedy government not extending a car park to service rate payers as they would rather gain millions for selling the land to be used. This land should be used to service the rate payers of this Suburb not bring in hordes from other areas who don’t pay our rates. How many rate payers of Nicholls would gain advantage of this so called “place of prayer”???????? Not many????? Get advice and opinions from residents who live near these “place of prayer” in other areas and NSW, they will let you know what goes on. This small land in Nicholls is not practical for the proposal. RATE PAYERS OPINION SHOULD COME FIRST. If this transaction goes ahead say goodbye to our elite suburb and our family we will be out of here.

Letting Muslims build a facility will ruin the “elite” nature of Nicholls huh? Jenjen didn’t like the way her comment was received and posted this followup:

Take a look around it seems we have nothing but CMC rent a crowd writing on this subject. Get your heads out of your buckets you obviously don’t live in the suburb and have no idea.

RiotACT readers are lot of things but being noted shills for the Canberra Muslim Community is not really one of them. Without speaking for anyone else I just hate lynch mobs with a passion, whether it’s a muslim one, or the “elite” residents of Nicholls.

Congratulations JenJen, you receive the prestigious RiotACT Flame Of The Week award.

Corin Forest

  • 17th Jul, 2009 at 5:43 AM

Has anyone been up to Corin Forest this season?

Is there much snow?

Anywhere for small kids to have a bit of a toboggan ride or anything like that?

We went up last season, but the hill was roped off and the cafe was pathetic - just wondering if anything has changed/improved?

The ABC reports that the eminently predictable flu season has once again taken the ACT health bureaucracy by surprise:

More than 9,500 people presented to ACT public hospital emergency departments in June, making it the busiest month on record.

Health Minister Katy Gallagher says most of the increase can be attributed to swine flu and there have been 383 confirmed cases in the ACT.

She says if demand does not drop off, then patients will face longer waits in emergency departments, and some elective surgery may have to be postponed to free up beds and operating theatres.

With a growing population we can pretty much expect any given winter month to be a record.

Mount Franklin Walkabout

  • 17th Jul, 2009 at 3:57 AM

I just called the Namadgi Visitors Centre to check road status and the road is open *to* Mount Franklin car park - I have never been up in winter so a friend and I want to go for a spin up to Mount Franklin as far as we can get and then go for a wander - apparently it’s only a few kms walk up to Mount Franklin from the car park although Mount Ginini / Gingera are the ones with snow on them?

We just want to see some nice winter outdoors - we’re sick of being stuck inside all the time - and we have a 4WD so we’re quite confident to drive as far as 4WD’s are supposed to go.

Any tips or advice? Is Mount Franklin Road a good pick for a general Sunday walkabout with possibility of some snow lying around to enjoy?
