We're in Perth for a friend's wedding and like every other trip to Perth, I spent every free moment eating at a variety of Singaporean and Malaysian food spots.
I caught up with my sister and her partner at Ria Authentic Malaysian Food, located in Leederville. I've eaten at Ria once, a few years ago. It's a lovely central location, with simple but stylish interior. The service is great - staff are friendly and helpful.
We ordered a range of food, to cater for both the vegetarian and meat lovers (i.e. me) as well as dessert. On the whole, the food was good but slightly disappointing for the price (worked out to an average of $40/person). With a name that includes "authentic", I was expecting really authentic food, but after a week of hunting down authentic food across Perth, Ria just doesn't measure up. A good indication is the lack of Singaporeans and Malaysians, which could be due to the price but probably due to the authenticity of the food. It seems that Ria is aimed at non-Singaporeans/Malaysians.
Anyhow, here's a quick run down of the food.
For starters, we had the stuffed mushrooms. I'm not a fan of mushrooms so I gave it a miss but the rest of the table really enjoyed it.
We ordered a sea food curry which looked good but sadly I had to give it a miss due to my shell fish allergies.
The chicken curry was very yummy, with a nice chilli bite. Worth ordering.
The pear and pinenut salad was an interesting combination but on all accounts, a combination that worked well.
The beef rendang was on the sweet side. It wasn't bad but my aunty Shirley makes a much better rendang.
The roti prata was served nice and hot on a wooden serving block. It was yummy but it didn't have the handmade taste to it (I swear it's from the same packet that hubby and I buy on a regular basis).
Hubby and I shared a mango pudding. It was prettily presented in a Martini glass, topped with cream and apple. It was fairly good but I've had better.
Our table ordered the Kuih Dadah. It was served warm with a scope of vanilla icecream and sliced apple. It was fairly tasty.
Our table also ordered the pandan icecream. This was probably the worst of the lot and definitely not worth the $8.00 we were charged. The pandan icecream was a strange fluro green. The pandan taste was fairly subtle and was more of an after-taste. Definitely give it a skip until they improve the recipe (they could learn a lot from House in Sydney who does a wonderful pandan icecream dessert called Better Than Sex).
Location & prices
Phone: (08) 9328 2998
Location: 106 Oxford Street, Leederville, WA Perth 6007
Prices: Mains are around the mid $20s. There were four of us and it cost about $40/person (which included 3 glasses of wine and 3 desserts).
Not a bad spot if you want a nicer spot for a meal but for a truer authentic meal (which may not be quite as pretty), I'll try some where else.
